Power In Listening With Our Hearts

Power in Listening With Our Hearts

Ayesha Curry and the other gorgeous Curry women were recently interviewed by Jada Pinkett Smith on Red Table Talk (RTT). The women were open and honest. They shared about what it was like dating celebrities and/or being seen as their husbands’ wives versus as themselves. Then, Ayesha (known for her cookbook, CoverGirl ads, etc. and as Steph Curry’s wife) talked about not getting attention from guys in all her years as a married woman. Her mother-in-law told her it would be dangerous if it happened, while Jada let her know that guys noticing her definitely existed but her radar was just not on. Ayesha received a lot of backlash for her statement but responded very gracefully to her attackers. Do watch the episode of RTT for more information.

The entire drama made me think about how we, humans, are very quick to judge others, even about things we ourselves are guilty of. Advice for Ayesha came from several women, their mamas, sisters, daughters and more. People who have not and may not be able to walk in Ayesha’s shoes. Thankfully, some women stood by her, including me. Jada’s response to Ayesha was the sweetest, that was a very “boss” move on Jada’s part because we all have our insecurities. Yes, even men!! Even if men show their insecurities in a different way.

We have prison cells so full of inmates because we are more interested in punishing than rehabilitating. What would happen if we started to listen to the heart behind people’s statements or started to look at the households where people grew up to understand why they do what they do? What if we decided to encourage and uplift people who are open about their weaknesses, and seek to rehabilitate people with more evil tendencies than the normal citizen?

We must all realize that we are not perfect. To err is after all human. I hope that women no longer will be quick to put each other down, to see their insecurities as “better” than others, or label a man as good because he makes millions. Let us treat each other as we want to be treated. Let us listen to each with our hearts and not our ears alone.
