Name : Falling in Love with Calabar Again

City : Calabar

Country : Nigeria

Continent : Africa

About Me : I believe Calabar can be way more than it is and I hope to be the one who brings new investment into the region

Challenge Faced : Over a decade ago, I visited a city in the Southeastern part of Nigeria called Calabar. It is known for its mild climate and a very well visited tourist attraction called the Calabar Carnival that takes places on an annual basis. I visited it then to attend the wedding of a friend, unfortunately I missed the carnival. I stayed with a sweet friend of a sweet friend. She and her family took such care of me: gave me the most amazing local food, and I even got to reconnect with an old friend from high school. My new friend Lizzie took me around town: to restaurants, eateries, a theatre, and a place called Tinapa. It was a fledgling area. Locals were out enjoying their city and were obviously proud of it. Fast forward to just a few months ago, the city I had learned to love had lost some of its glow. Some fear had creeped into it since the riot that caused the citizens to revolt against police violence. This had given youth the opportunity to destroy even parts of the city that would benefit them. During this new visit, as I was driven around the town, its potential was still very clear, but its brokenness was as clear, and I immediately started to think: what investors can we get to repair this most beautiful part of the world. I am working on strategy for this repair. I want to see it stronger than it ever has been. I want to see, perhaps community solar panels, powering it up, and people losing their fear of insecurity in the region. I plan events for the region and expect it to come into fruition soon. I was blessed to meet with a couple of commissioners here and believe that I have built the first few relationships I need to get the ball rolling on making Calabar more beautiful than it used to be.

How I Overcame : Visiting and walking by the beautiful water in Calabar, and letting the wind and serenity of the water take away all pain

What single advice would you like to give women? : Water is healing. If you can find a lake or body of water near you, sit by it, pray a prayer, and let me wind carry it to the Creator. Everything will be okay.
